Macrons File U.S. Defamation Lawsuit Against Candace Owens
French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron have filed a defamation lawsuit in Delaware against U.S. commentator and podcaster Candace Owens. The lawsuit alleges that Owens repeatedly published false claims stating that Brigitte Macron was born male and involved in identity fraud. According to the complaint, the Macrons issued multiple retraction requests before proceeding with legal action.
The claims at the center of the lawsuit stem from a long-running online rumor first circulated in France in 2021. Owens amplified the allegation through social media and an extended series on her podcast, which the complaint identifies as the primary source of the statements at issue.
Because the Macrons are public figures, they must prove “actual malice” under U.S. defamation law — meaning Owens knew the claims were false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth. Owens has publicly rejected the allegations in the lawsuit and has said she will contest the case.
The legal proceedings in Delaware are separate from Brigitte Macron’s prior actions in France, where individuals have faced trial for spreading similar rumors online.
